Child Tax Deduction Scam Alert

If you qualified for the Child Tax Credit on your federal tax return, great news! You are automatically enrolled with monthly payments set to begin on July 15, 2021.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will pay half of the total Child Tax Credit in monthly installments and the other half of that tax credit will be paid when your 2021 income tax return is filed.

How do you know if you qualify?

If you:

  • Claimed the Child Tax Credit on your 2019 or 2020 tax return;

  • Sent the IRS your information to receive the 2020 Economic Impact Payment through the 'Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here' tool; and

  • Maintain a primary residence within the United States for more than half the year (this includes the District of Columbia); or your spouse with whom you filed a joint return maintains a primary residence in the US for more than half of the year; and

  • Are the parent of a child under the age of 18 (at the end of 2021) and that child has a valid social security number; and

  • Qualify for certain income limits.

Be aware Scammers are out there!

The IRS will never contact you via email, telephone, text, or social media to obtain private information for the Child Tax Credit. If you are contacted through any of the above mentioned methods, report scammer/spam abuse to the IRS by forwarding the email or contact phishing@irs.gov.
